"I just can't get you outta my head..."
« on: December 22, 2006, 12:07:15 AM »
OK, girlfriends (and boys, if you are out there and so inclined), help me out here...

I'm compiling a list of dancy, clubby tunes to DL off iTunes and grab off my own iTunes playlist to make a mix of my favorite dance-pop-type love songs, like the above-mentioned "Can't Get You Outta My Head" by Kylie Minogue and "I Turn to You" by Melanie C. (yes, of Spice Girls fame, but her solo music is amazingly good - and diverse). Madonna, too, like "Beautiful Stranger" and her later, more modern-sounding stuff so it fits in here.

HOWEVER, there is a caveat - anyone who mentions Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey will be bound and gagged and cast into the depths of eHell, and I don't care if Mariah and I share the same birthday, as was pointed out to me several years ago (she's five years older than me).

Trance, dance-pop, house, R & B, whatever the sound, chuck your suggestions at me - but the tunes must be DANCEABLE and must be CLUBBY, not that sappy, slow-dancing dreck, but high-energy, bouncy, trancy or just plain cool. I'm looking through my collection right now because I know I have some good ones, but the NyQuil may take effect before I'm done searching.

Even bubblegum Europop such as the A*Teens (oooh! That gave me a good one! "Upside Down") will be acceptable, so long as it is danceable (and most Europop is, so I'm not scared of that). Europop from years past, like Roxette or a-Ha or Ace of Base is also acceptable (how scary is it that I know this much Europop? I'm not sure). Erasure, Pet Shop Boys - all acceptable. Britney Spears - not acceptable. Paris Hilton - NOT ACCEPTABLE. I'm afraid my iTunes would catch some kind of virus from her. Jessica Simpson - definitely not acceptable. Ashlee Simpson - also not acceptable.

And no mush, dreck and/or sap. :p This is a very special iTunes mix, for a very special purpose - ie, getting me up and going in the mornings - and also for listening to in the car whenever I'm with Paul. Yeah, yeah, I'm a right minx, go ahead and say it. :p I'm calling it my GirliTunes mix, so he can't figure out what I'm up to. :p

I always love the song "Don't Call Me Baby" by Madison Avenue, and I think it fits the bill, genre wise.  I might have to go make a similar playlist now...

I'd suggest you start looking into the collections from the Ministry of Sound (there's just too many for me to list here).  If you're not familiar, the Ministry of Sound's a big club in London, specializes in this kind of music.  They put out their "best of" compilations every fall.  Here's where to look up the "2007 Annual" information:  http://www.ministryofsound.com/music/albums/TheAnnual2007

I'm a big fan of Eric Prydz.  My husband loves the Basement Jaxx.   Both show up a lot in the compilation albums.  We both do well with the compilations, there's always something we can both appreciate.

Just don't drive while listening to this type of music.   ;D

oooh, I've got a few of the MoS collections...I've been lax in getting my dance on, because I've been more into the indie rock thing lately, so a lot of Shins, Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service, etc has gone into my collection, but little to no dance. Sad, as one of my best friends is a drum n' bass DJ (who loves all kinds of music) who has been trying to get me to expand my electronica collection for years. He's helped some, but I got stuck in the trance/house rut and gave up when everything started sounding like 1995 all over again.

I'm not looking for anything hardcore, just with a good dancy, clubby vibe and a good beat, mostly female-oriented. I have a lot of good club tracks from the '90s and early 2000s in my collection - I have a lot of ATB, a lot of the Trance Mix USA albums produced by ATB's label, quite a few Trance Nation collections (which are from MoS), both UK and US versions (I tend to like the UK ones better, no surprise there for an Anglo/Europhile like me!), a lot of LaBouche, Quad City DJs, Amber (can you guess what era I grew up going to clubs in?), Cathy Dennis, Bizarre Inc, C + C Music Factory, The KLF...the list goes on. And on. And on. But I'm wanting to put something more "girly" together just for the sheer fun of it.

The bad news is...this IS my driving music. ;D One of my best driving/listening to music experiences EVER came when I rounded the curve on I-5 into San Diego (driving down from Long Beach) when you can finally see the Pacific Ocean, and Robert Miles' "Children" started playing at the EXACT moment the ocean came into view, with the setting sun shimmering over it. It was fantastic, and so perfect. If my life had a soundtrack and a movie to accompany it, that shot would be in there somewhere with that exact track playing. I've never been able to duplicate it. :(

Look up Matrix themed music. Also the theme from Blade Runner is pretty trancy/weird.

Also if you search around, look for a techno remix of Carl Orff's O Fortuna.

OK Moonbunny, do you want songs with lyrics, or just techno music?

If its an either/or kinda thing, here's my suggestions for techno (used to be a raver kid about 7 years ago)

anything by DJ Icey (that is not the song name, anything Icey does is usually good)
DJ Keoki (the Transatlantic Move CD) "Break In" is my fave driving song
Rabbit in the Moon (does a really great remix of a Tori Amos song, at least IMO)
The House Connection CD by Bad Boy Bill and Richard "Humpty" Vission

It's not really "girly" music, but these are my faves.....hope that helps  :D

I'll take either/or - it was going to be a sheer dancy, girlie-music mix, but the more I look at it, the more I realize how obvious that would be if he started listening closely - so mixing in instrumental tracks is good. ;D

Anything trancy, dancy, clubby and rave-y is good by me! I want some good, upbeat stuff to listen to when I'm driving again - I think that will be slightly key to getting my courage back up and getting me back on the road. I haven't driven a car myself since August 30th. That's kind of a scary thought...
