Replying to someone
« on: December 06, 2006, 03:17:20 AM »
Ok, this is my first and only internet forum and what's confusing to me is replying to somebody's reply.  In the last system, we wrote directly to them and everyone could tell to whom the comment was addressed.  There doesn't seem to be this feature on this, should I just write their name, like Hi Miss Moonbunny, and go on with my reply?

I'm having the same problem.  You can quote someone using the button on the bottom right hand corner, but for some reason, it does not say "To:"

I have to say this is one feature of this particular forum I don't like.  Maybe it's an Admin issue and I haven't set the configurations correctly.  When you quote someone, you can clearly see in the coding at the top of the reply that it records who is being replied to and the message number but neither are being actually displayed in the actual posts.

Well, that's something I'll have to investigate and work on to see if there is another way.  If anyone is familiar with Admining an SMF forum and can enlighten me, I'm all ears.

Edited to add:  If you use the quote feature at the top right of the post you are replying to, it does identify who you are replying to at the top of the new reply post. See this post for example.

Most of the forums I have been on are like this.  You have to get used to quoting all or part of the message from the person you are replying too.  Otherwise I like this style.  You can do all sorts of nifty things by your name.  Pictures, avatars that identify you.

Im not personally familiar with it but I checked with someone I know who is and they said that quoting is the only method.

EHellDame,

Thank you for looking into, if this is the new way I will get used to it, because as I've said I'm not going anywhere  :)

One good thing about the quote system is that it makes it a little easier for a poster to reply to a lot of people at once. Rather than making many new posts, each to a seperate individual, you can now just do one post encompassing all the posts/quotes you would like to reply to...does that make sense?

That makes lots of sense, but is there any way to tell when someone has replied to you, then? I've been playing with the profile options & figured most things out (i think), but haven't been able to nail that one.

For instance - sahmommi, will you be notified that you have a message because i quoted you, or MadMadge will you be notified ... or something else completely?

I think Venus replied to one of my posts, but the top of my screen says "you have 0 messages, 0 are new."

...confuzled li'l monkey here.

Well, when I got on here just now, the first thing I clicked on was "Show new replies to your posts" and this thread showed up. As of this morning, this is the only thread that I've posted in that has new replies. However, I don't think that it takes you directly to your reply when you click on the thread link--I think it either opens up at the first post or opens up where you left off reading (I didn't pay attention when I opened this one  :-[ Sorry! LOL).

I am pretty sure that the "you have 0 messages, 0 are new" notification is for private messages, not post replies.

The "reply" feature is one I miss from the other forum set-ups too.  The email notification tells you that someone has posted to a thread you've posted to...but it won't take you to a reply that is meant for you.

I'm getting used to it.  But it is a little less personal than some of the crazy fun we used to be able to have with each other.
