I think that this is the first time I have seen one in DEC.

Maybe Santa can slide down it like in Xanth novels

Awesome!

I tend to grab everybody to come look if I see a rainbow because they are such rare and wonderful things. I always believe rainbows are a smile from God so I want everyone to see it.

It shocks me how many people get annoyed when I ask them to come look. Are our lives really so busy that we can't stop for a moment to enjoy a rainbow or a sunset?

I saw  a round one once.  We were flying to Germany at the time and the pilot called our attention to it.

The double ones are really cool too

Shhh!!

Don't tell her. Or they might charge us with having unapproved Christmas Decorations.

Or is there too much color for their rules?

Quick story:
Back home in MD, whenever I saw a rainbow it was just a little patch of color in the clouds, so I never thought they were a big deal.  Pretty, but not CRUD MONKEYS! COME LOOK NOWZ!

When I came to Florida to live in Orlando for a while, there was a rainstorm while I was on the bus, and when it was over, and we were driving past an empty field, I saw a full arch spanning as far as I could see.  It was absolutely breathtaking.

Now my reaction is more like Cyndi's post (although I never thought of them as "smiles" from God, before.  That's cute)

But I've never heard of a Xanth novel.  What's a Xanth novel?

"My feet are killing me."
"That may be true, but you can't press charges unless you catch them in the act!"

Oh my my my - poor thing

they are a series of books by Piers Anthony and based on your screen name you would love them, they are filled with the most awful puns you have ever  read.

They are in the Sci-Fi/ Fantasy section. I think that the first one is called "The Magic of Xanth" and there are about 20 some in the series now.

Xanth is a world where magic works and you get shoes from a "shoe tree" and there are such things as "Spelling Bees" but if you are not careful they will spell a word right but not the one you might mean.  and if you can catch them you can ride on a rainbow.

Light reading, but fun.

Oh- and one more thing the land of Xanth looks remarkably like some state called Florida

I felt the same way about the Northern Lights in Alaska.... like they were a hug from GOD.... they are so beautiful and truly awe-inspiring.  I once called a newcomer at  1AM  because I knew she hadn't seen them yet and wanted to so badly.   She wasn't mad, she was thrilled I remembered to wake her!   We sat outside in the minus 40 degree cold and just watched silently....  so beautiful.

So I take it that you live ( or perhaps formerly did in Alaska)?  We've vacationed there a couple of times and loved it, though we never did see the Northern Lights.  Funny - a couple of years ago my company started to do lots of business in Alaska (it's a national company)  and I was amazed at the level of ignorance among my co-workers.  One was talking to a business-owner in Anchorage sometime around February and he was talking about having to close early that day due to a big snowstorm coming.  Lots of people in my office were laughing "Alaska, they get snow everyday, that's ridiculous!"  Well, not really.  Anchorage is pretty well protected by the Japanese current and just doesn't get a lot of snow - at any rate, a lot less than other locations on the continent such as Minnesota or northern Alberta.  And someone else was chortling about an ice-company operating in the city, making jokes about coals-to-Newcastle, that sort of thing.  Honestly, much of Alaska has a pretty temperate climate, you can't just walk to the city ice-bank and chip off what you need...

Anyway, people assumed that if I knew a certain amount about the state it must be because I or Dh had been forced to work there at some point.  When I said "no, it was vacation" - I got the "why would ANYONE want to vacation there?"  Well, lots of reasons.  I still remember the boys  (10 and 9 at the time) running around the beach at Land's End Hotel in Homer at midnight, having a wonderful time.  The light was similar to sunset, and they honestly did not need parkas!  And the glaciers - there's just no other sight like it.

The first one is "A Spell for Chameleon".  Don't ask me how I know.   LOL

The first few that I read were in "book club" editions with 3 books each in them. Fun books though.

Hawaii doesn't have rainbows on its license plates and driver's licenses for nothing. Some of the most beautiful rainbows in the world can be found in Hawaii. One time, when my best friend (who lives there) took me on a visit to Kaua'i (she lives on O'ahu), where it rains about every five minutes without fail, we had to pull over on the highway in a place called Koloa to get a picture of one of the most stunning rainbows I have ever seen. I still have the picture somewhere; it's absolutely gorgeous. One of these days if I find it, I should scan it in, or if I can get her to send me another copy, so much the better.

There are some gorgeous rainbows to be found here, too, in the upper northeast reaches of the Bay Area where I live now, alternately known as the Delta (San Joaquin/Sacramento River Delta). I've had to pull over and get some stunning shots on my cellphone of fully-arcing rainbows over the highway. I didn't realize until just a couple of months ago that my phone did have a way for me to save photos, and that was to save them to an album online, so all those utterly gorgeous pictures have been lost to the mists of time. Maybe during this year's rainy season I can get some more photos and post them (I promise not to take them WHILE driving, but pull over and take pics!!).

We really do get some gorgeous rainbows, often full arcs. :) Sometimes we've gotten the double-rainbow effect, too, but it's rare.

Well, I can moan about the terrible Scottish weather with its copious amounts of rain, but I have to admit we get crackers of rainbows over here as well. Really beautiful and I've gotten so I can tell if the sun is giving off a certain kind of light, and the rain is a particular kind, I know I'll look out my window and see a rainbow over the hills.

We get some decent double ones too.  I heard someone talking about rainbows on the radio once, and I'm sure he said all rainbows are double rainbows, it's just the second one is often quite faint - but if you look for it really hard, you'll see it. I have to say, I do spot a second one quite often now, although sometimes it comes across as more of a hint of one. Kind of out of the corner of your eye and if you look right at it, it goes away.

Saw a very bizarre rainbow in a cloud once. The whole cloud was literally glowing (and I do mean glowing) iridescent all sort of pink and green....really bizarre effect - I've never forgotten it.
