Here's the thing. In France, either your SO hosts a surprise something for you, or you can do it yourself. It can be "go dutch at a restaurant just to be together" , or dinner at one's place.

My birthday is tomorrow. Since my mother won't be able to celebrate with me this year, I thought about hosting at Plushie's place, and he accepted. I want to do something simple, and I was wondering what E-Hellions would think about my ideas. (We will be 5 or 6 people)

Drinks : variety of drinks (soda and other fizzy drinks, juices, water, maybe a bottle of white wine depending on what Plushie tells me tonight)

Main food : the usual "snack-y" junk food stuff (crisps, peanuts, Pringles and co) to toast with drinks, and then do something like a "cold" buffet with toasts with different combination, as well as a large rice salad (in which Plushie and I usually put rice, corn, tuna, and a balsamic vinegar-based sauce) . I was also thinking of maybe adding chopped vegetables and a dipping sauce (it was a hit at a party I went to some time ago) .

*if* we can change the logistics in Plushie's living room, however, I'll scratch the big rice salad and make a nice dish, probably with chicken or pork.

For dessert, I was planning on making a simple chocolate cake myself. And maybe add some fruit to that.

*Right now I'm concentrating on doing the dishes to have the kitchen spotless, and then I'll "finish" the living room. Tomorrow morning, I'll go grocery shopping (I want everything as fresh as possible) .

What do you think about my plans ?

Thanks Cheesy

I figured it would be easier to do that than to cook a ton of stuff, since there is quite a bit of heat and I would probably be feeling ill after a while. 9:23 AM right now, I'll "play" online until about 10, then quick shower, then grocery shopping, and after lunch, I'll have to vacuum. That's going to be fun, haha  Grin

Happy Birthday! I think your plans sound good.

Thank you Cheesy !

Got done with the farmer's market. No mushrooms T_T .

So I got carrots, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes, as well as some cherries, raspberries and two melons that I'll cut for dessert.

Off to do the drinks trip, then the general food trip, then the junk food trip. It takes me two minutes to go to the store, so I guess I'll manage... then some more cleaning to do while I start getting everything ready XD .

I feel like a housewife, but believe me, applying that term to me right now is like telling me I'm a princess or the Queen of England Tongue

Everything sounds good except one bottle of wine won't be enough for 6 people.

Well, I asked Plushie and he thought we might not need the wine, but not everyone drinks Tongue . We'll be 5 people after all, only 4 do drink, and we have a nice white wine bottle somewhere, as well as other things :p .

Hmm, I think I said I was supposed to make the other grocery trips... well, huh, off I go Tongue

If you don't have enough wine to serve to your guests it would probably be best to make it a dry evening.  If you offer something as a host, you should have enough for all guests who want it.  I'm a firm believer that it is rude to run out or not have enough of something. To have one bottle of wine with 4 drinkers is not enough. That's why you need to decide to have it or not.  If you have it you need more.

Well, they're not big drinkers, so I'm not sure that they'd drink more than a glass, but you're right about the fact that we have to be careful about quantity. (There is a cave... or whathaveyou where Plushie can get more if we need more Tongue )

I'm done with the drinks trip, and the "general groceries" trip. I think all I need to buy now is more eggs, I'll check the cupboards and off I go. And then I'll have to get started on the rice salad and the cake, and the last minute cleanups will be... well, the last things on the list. Thankfully, it's not much!

It went fine Smiley

We had one bottle of wine for the two men that were there, no one else drank alcohol.

I had the "snacks" and the chopped cucumber out, the big rice salad was a hit (and we have plenty for today, too Cheesy ) and the cake... haha, when I went to the store, I found Cadbury milk chocolate. Since I'd been at the farmer's market for the raspberries, I thought I'd play with that because of my sister, who was coming (the sister who was in Birmingham) . So I melted the chocolate, poured it on the cake, and decorated it with raspberries. Very simple, but quite neat Tongue .

My sister and my (male) friend were there before Plushie arrived from work. Even though I consider that he has given me the best present ever already (trip to Florida in September) , he arrived home with red roses and a box of chocolate (making *me* melt, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww) . The friends who came gave me luggage tags (nifty ones, at that) as a token gift because they want to participate in my enjoyment of Florida. My sister said she'd give me something else over the weekend (I'll be seeing the other sister, who would have been too tired from her work week to come last night) .

I feel sooo grateful for those friends! I don't care about the presents, but there were people there. And I didn't get candles, but my sister insisted on them singing the birthday song anyway *_* .

So it went pretty well, yay Smiley
