California Baby brand stuff (wash, lotion, baby rash etc) is all non paraben, essential oils etc.  I like their lotion and sun screen.

Burts Bees is a little bit less eco friendly but not like the big brand names.. Burts Bees unscented body wash for baby is great!

There are wipes that are "green" and another brand is called Seventh Generation, they make diapers, wipes, laundry soap, stuff like that.

Your friend better hope baby's a thumb sucker!  If she's super anti-plastic, she's going to be SOL about pacifiers!

Target just opened a brand of organic cotton organic dye baby clothing, that's one thing to do.

Hope this helps

This book is good too.  It lists a bunch of natural remedies you can use on common ailments like the cold.  I've met a few moms who swear by it.

Maybe a goat? Or invest in one of those adopt a cow for a poor family in another country organizations. But if you found a really nice, milkable nanny goat, that might be the unique eco friendly gift you're looking for.  Evil
But if the mother is that keen on something eco friendly, I'd consider one of the adopt an animal programs.

I have an excessive fondness for parentheses.

Regarding pacifiers:  Natursutten

I have a friend who swears by this thing.  Expensive, yes, but there's nothing worse than a orally fixated baby who rejects your fingers, can't yet suck her thumb, and refuses to BF when she's not hungry (bitter?  me?  noooo.).

I really need to go home and get some sleep.   I originally read the title of this thread as "Why do I need to buy an eco-friendly baby?"

I was curious to see how people were going to answer that!

I read it as "Where do I buy the eco-friendly baby?"

You too?

Me, too!  I wonder why that is....

I'd buy them a book or two.

I'd stay away from any sort of baby product, natural or otherwise - when someone expresses their opinions of other people's choices so forcefully, I'm not going to exert myself to try and find something that's likely to be thrown in my face.

I'm not a fan of charitable-giving as gift in general, but I rather like the adopt a goat idea here.

In my case, the next thread on the list starts with the word, "Where," so my mind just combined the two thread titles!

I vote for some good kid books.  I probably wouldn't buy them any dipes because they may have a particular brand they want to use.

Organic cotton onesies, in gender neutral colours.

A few options:  http://www.katequinnorganics.com/, http://www.zee-spot.com/, http://www.sweetonez.com/

Not 100% sure this one is organic, but it is very popular among the crunchy parents I know, and the dolls are cute, very cuddly, and unique looking (and popular with the kids): http://www.blablakids.com/

Maybe it's time for a major-credit-card gift card.

PS - this green-PC behavior won't last long, I suspect. In a little while they'll just be glad they can keep the kid from picking up and eating cigarette butts off the street.

I don't know about that. A lot of parents do raise their children in eco-friendly ways for a while. Also, I don't know why people get so slighted with eco-friendly parents but not with parents who say ' no bratz dolls'. Honestly, if I were to give a gift I would want it to be used not tossed away or given to someone else. So stating that preference is not actually impolite. Railing against those who don't believe in your philosophy is rude, and I believe the OP is doing very well by ignoring that.

Also, you don't have to give a gift at all. Don't attend the shower, voila no gift needs to be given. Don't send anything passive aggressive.

This may sound weird but a jar of Virgin Organic Coconut Oil.  It is the all purpose crunchy mama go to item.  It is a cloth diaper friendly diaper rash cream, baby lotion, nipple cream, and about a million other things.  A jar lasts a long time and you don't have to worry about getting the right brand or fibers or any of that other stuff that us eco mamas worry about.

Just in answer to this part.....I think that, in my experience, it seems like some people who go green tend to talk down to those that aren't as green as they are....note the "plastic cr@p" comment.  When I have heard comments about Bratz, Elmo, etc, it has sounded less like "I am superior" and more like "that character drives me up the wall".  Perhaps its just me though... Smiley

I have a friend who made a very large production about no primary colors on the clothes, no cartoon characters, gender neutral toys (and they must be wooden), etc, etc.  It became a large production just to pick a gift for her first child, and with the 2nd, she sent out a list of what they did and did not want with the shower invites, and specified that she wanted gift receipts as well.......

I think it goes without saying that I declined to attend the 2nd shower....

OP, is your friend registered anywhere?  If it were me, I would put together a practical gift bag of things like nail clippers, crib sheets (go for the organic cotton ones), bibs, or something like that.
