I find the black crocs less ugly than certain varieties. There's a girl at my school who generally wears dark, extremely covering clothing. She's usually head to toe in black, except for her bright red crocs. It just makes the shoes look even uglier when they're the focal point of an outfit.

Then again, I've been told they're very comfortable, and seeing as our campus is all hills and stairs...

I had to wear a cast shoe when I sprained both ankles.  This was before Crocs came out. 

(You want ugly shoes?  The platform shoes that girls wore while I was in high school.  Not me - I wore sneakers.)  Like these:
