Just out of curiosity, why did he store the cake in the garage? Could he not store it in his house, or in the fridge?

I've known cake decorators who used the cheapest possible box cake mix because to them, the decorating was the important part.  It didn't matter at all to them that the cake was terrible!!

I'm an amateur cake decorator and do indeed use box cakes.  Everyone always asks me if they are from scratch because they taste just as yummy (butter recipe or pudding in the mix!-not the cheapest ones possible).  It does matter that people enjoy the cake (to me-I know you were speaking from experience).  But I can shave time in prep and still accomplish that.  Of course I am not a cake decorating picasso.
I'm glad the hosts copped to their mistake so they could save the baker some embarrassment.
