I just post on my status update, "Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone!" or something like that. I can't see how anyone would get offended by not receiving a personal note, knowing that it's Facebook.

I'd go with the general status update of thanks.

And then for those posts directly on my wall, if they said anything more specific than "Happy birthday!", I'd comment on the post, as Misha726 did, on the theory that THEY will get an update in their newsfeed, but no one else will.

And Miss Manners has said that a simple greeting card that's signed doesn't require a response, but a longer letter does; that would be my reasoning behind why I'd respond.

I think it's fine to post a general thank you. If anybody's birthday wish includes a question, or something you would like to respond to, I think it's fine to respond to those specific posts. You don't have to reply to every post on your wall.

I just do a thank you on my status. If anyone goes above and beyond the normal "happy birthday," I'll thank that person on their wall.
