A "slight" misunderstanding
Shoo:
We received a Christmas card in the mail from a couple we know who got married in 09/05. We hadn't heard from them since the wedding -- we moved a few towns away, and everybody was just busy, I guess. The male half of the couple is someone my dh used to work with, and was pretty good friends with.
The Christmas card was signed, Merry Christmas from Brian, Cindy and Abigail.
I was surprised, but not really, you know what I mean? They are in their early 30's, and financially secure, with a home, etc. so I thought, hey, cool!
I sent a card back to them that said something like, Wow! There's one more of you now! We hadn't heard. Congratulations!
Dh just got a call from Brian, explaining that Abigail is not a baby. It's their new dog.
Now, I know a lot of people think of their pets as family, but signing the dogs name to a fairly recently married couple's Christmas card is just asking for people to misunderstand the situation, IMO.
And, to top it all off, I addressed my card to Brian, Cindy and Abigail. Believe me when I say that I would never, in a million years, address a holiday card to a dog, providing I actually know it's a dog. That's just me. I like dogs okay, but I haven't ever and will never give them the same status as a human being.
This whole thing left us wondering how many people they had to phone to explain the misunderstanding.

Your post made me chuckle. I can certainly see how there could be a misunderstanding. But I doubt it's too big a deal to have addressed your card to include Abigail. They probably thought it was cute...and when they realized you didn't know Abigail was a dog, it opened up some long lost lines of communication for you all.
It would've helped if they'd have included a picture of their new "family member." But no harm done.
And I typically sign my cards (when I send them) with the humans' names and all the critter's names. (But only for people I know...who also know I have the critters.)

Ok, this? Cracked me up.
I feel your pain, though. I got a card today from a guy I haven't heard from in several years. It was a picture of him with a wife (whom I've never met) and a daughter (news to me). The signature? "The [XX] Family." Well, thanks. Identify, people!
Tabris:
My husband received a card from a friend that's just the baby's picture with "happy holidays" beneath.
No baby name. No family name. No nothing other than the return address.
Truly baffling to me.

Wow - talk about the easy way of getting Christmas cards done!
