It sounds like the employees have some sort of scam going on.  Hopefully this was something that the owner was unaware of and will take measures to stop from happening in the future.

That's exactly what I was going to say. Two employees in cahoots skimming money.

Eat the cost of what?  NOT cleaning your laundry?

Locally, you don't pay anything to the dry cleaners (or laundry service) until you pick up your finished clothes.  Is it customary where you are to pay in advance?

I don't know. I only go to a dry cleaner once a year or so. In the future I will absolutely find a provider that allows payment at pickup.

And considering the reaction of today's clerk, I agree, I think they are both running the scam.

To his credit, the owner seemed incredibly reasonable and didn't give me any grief whatsoever.

I get a discount if I pay up front so I usually do. It is clearly marked on the paperwork though so no double charging!

I recently dropped of a king size comforter at a dry-cleaners with washing machines and it cost about 15 with a 4 hour turn around. I assume that is what happened here - they put CakeBeret's clothes in the washer and washed them that way instead of doing dry cleaning. If there was a stain on the garment I would check to see if it is still there.

OR they just put them on a hanger and slid a bag over them.  Maybe sprayed them with Febreze first, to get odors out.

I just got home.

I went up there and they said they got ahold of yesterday's clerk, she said that I had not paid. Y'all would be proud of my spine through this whole ordeal. I said "That is completely untrue. Let's call the owner." She got the owner on the phone, I told him my side of the story.

Apparently, they don't even dryclean on the weekends

They send their drycleaning offsite, and it doesn't get sent out on weekends. So when I reiterated to the owner that the clerk had offered an hour-and-a-half turnaround, on a Saturday, he said "That's not right." and immediately offered me a refund. He offered to send the bag out for cleaning Monday. I declined and said I'd rather just take it home.

So there is clearly some sort of scam going.

He told me to have today's clerk give me my bag plus the refund. I handed the phone back to the clerk, and she talked to the owner for a minute, then hung up and started wandering around the laundromat avoiding me. I finally got her attention, she said that the owner was going to call the other clerk and call back. Fine, I would wait. The owner called back, the clerk got huffy, slammed the bag on the counter and said "There." I said very politely that the owner had promised me a refund. The clerk said she'd have to call the owner back. Fine. So she called him, apparently he told her to give me the refund. She went from surly to downright hostile as she started gathering the money. Told me "Take it to X Cleaner next time, they'll charge you 50 bucks, and I guess we'll have to eat the cost of this."

So, yeah, definitely never darkening their door again.

I'm not sure I'd post a Yelp review right away. It sounds like the owner is honest and didn't know what was going on. Is there a way to contact the owner directly in a week or so, OP? If so, I'd make a point of seeing him and letting him know you are the person who had the complaint in order to see if he would tell you what he did (if anything). If the owner was guilty of nothing more than trusting two thieves and has taken appropriate steps, then posting a damaging review might hurt someone who doesn't deserve to have his business ruined.

Does this seem a good idea or not?

I think it does.  The owner sounded reasonable.  The fact that he told the OP that they don't do dry cleaning on weekends tells me he didn't know any of this was going on.  I'd try to contact him again, and if I couldn't, I would make sure to include him in my Yelp review, something like, "The owner was reasonable and very helpful.  Until I see those 2 employees gone, I won't be returning there as they were obviously running a scam right under everyone's noses."

My younger daughter used to get tonsillitis several times a year.   Whenever I asked our doctor "Shouldn't she have her tonsils removed?", the answer was always a reproving "We don't just whip out tonsils at the drop of a hat anymore."   This made me furious, as though I was a hysterical mother.

I made an appointment with an ENT specialist (and that wasn't easy - first I had to get a recommendation, then I had to wait months for her schedule to open up).  She examined my daughter, heard my story, and said "Well, she doesn't have anything wrong with her at the moment.   Let's just wait and see."

I said "No.   I want those things GONE."  The doctor looked a bit stunned, but honestly, I had had more than enough.   My daughter got the surgery, and she's had hardly any throat problems since.

I went through that too!!!  I finally had to TELL my doctor that it was time for a tonsillectomy, after I'd suffered with tonsillitis for THREE SOLID MONTHS, at the wise old age of 23.   It was NOT fun at that age.

There is, for some reason, an urban legend that doctors take out tonsils "at the drop of a hat." At least, some other doctors must do it. I've never run into such doctors myself.

Three months is nothing. I went for three years with chronic tonsillitis as a child. When, finally convinced by my recurrent infections all over my body, they removed them, they discovered it was a much trickier operation than they expected, due to multiple abscesses. I honestly believe that this affected my health, and probably my social development, for the rest of my life.
My cousin's memoir of love and loneliness while raising a child with multiple disabilities will be out on Amazon soon! Know the Night, by Maria Mutch, has been called "full of hope, light, and companionship for surviving the small hours of the night."

It is not and urban legend.

They used to. In the '20s and '30s, one kid would get a sore throat and often the whole family would go into the office and have them out at once.  (I have no research - just firsthand stories from my childhood and books.)

I was on the borderline - it was discussed sometimes, but they didn't do it until I insisted when I was 21. Up to about the age of 50, I said that was the best thing I ever did medically.

I had mine out in 1975, and it was not terribly uncommon - a few bouts of strep and out they came.  DS had them out a few years ago, and the ENT at that time told us the criteria was so many bouts of strep in the past 6 months (I think it was 3) or 5 within the past year.  DS was right on the borderline but he agreed to go ahead and do it for a variety of reasons.
