The only thing I can think of as to why they would do that is people arguing over the price because they pad what you thought you were going to pay, or if you don't tip to their liking, but no, they wouldn't be getting my business.

The place is now out of business.

I think they were doing an early version of what A&F is doing now. 

Big windows made the whole salon visible from the street.  They wanted the young, the slim and the totally hip. Older women,  larger women and women wearing comfortable shoes weren't welcome.  Asking them to leave a credit card in the custody of the receptionist was a way of finding out how desperate these women were to fit in.

Even if I had left the card I wouldn't have trusted the operators to give me a decent cut.  I went down the street and got what I wanted for a reasonable price.

About A&F- I was thinking about this last night and something occurred to me...

I've got the Burj al Arab on my facebook feed, ever since I "liked" its FB page. Its PR team posts lots of cool things- photos of the hotel, yummy food from the restaurants, you name it. The hotel was built for the super rich in mind, and rooms start at over $1000 a night. (More like huge suites than regular rooms)
However, I have never heard anyone from the Burj al Arab say anything so asinine as A&F's CEO did. I've never heard them say "We don't want middle class people here..Some people just don't belong, we don't want them here making us look bad", and so on. Quite the opposite- they seem quite happy to take anyone's money. As long as you can pay for a room, or pay the restaurant bill, they don't care whether you're rich enough that money is no object, or whether you had to save up a long time to pay for it.

So there you have it- if a place as exclusive as the Burj al Arab can manage to market itself without trashing on anyone who falls outside its target market, then A&F has no excuse for it.

I agree that I wouldn't like it, and wouldn't patronize a place like that, but after hearing my son's story I can see why some places might resort to it.  He manages a high end day spa; the other day they had a client come in, receive over $400 worth of Botox, throw $100 on the counter and run out.  She refused to answer her phone; they ended up calling the police to report her for theft of services.  She came back in the next day, furious, and paid another $100 but insisted that the service sheet showing how much she had received was a lie as 'she never got that much Botox' (even though a scan of her past visits showed that yes, she always got that much).  So the salon is out $200, but well rid of her.

He is gathering up A&F clothing and going to Skid Row to hand it out to homeless people. He is also requesting that others join him in gathering clothes and taking them to homeless shelters.
I think this is the perfect solution.  >:D

I'm done with our nearest IHOP. Service is slow, and we never get everything we order. We went last week, and spent 25 minutes waiting for pancakes. I've never worked at IHOP, but when I was at Cracker Barrel, our target was 8 min for breakfast foods, and 13 min for lunch/dinner. It wasn't terribly crowded either. I suspect that our waitress forgot to put in our order because a table with a much larger party that was seated and ordered after us got their food first.  >:(  When our food finally came, DH's meal was missing a side, my hash browns were burned black, and we didn't get the milks we had ordered for the kids. After dropping the food off, our server was MIA. We finally just went up front to pay the bill, and I let the manager know everything that had gone badly. She was very sympathetic, but in the end her reaction boiled down to "wow, that sucks, well you have a good day now"

This sounds familiar - but I thought it was just our local IHOP.   I have had decent service at others, but locally - meh.  I had a similar experience to yours (server forgot to put in the order) but at least the manager gave us a 50% discount.  We have been several times - but the experience has never been good.   And the parking lot seems to be awfully empty.

I had a bad experience (my first!) at Panera Bread last night.  They just started offering cold soba noodles with chilled shrimp as a summer special.  So of course, that's what I wanted to try as our knitting group goes to Panera every other Wednesday night so new items are welcomed! 

I placed my order and noticed that there were at least a dozen people waiting for their food even though I was the only one ordering.  After about 20 minutes of waiting, I went up to the counter and asked about my salad.  The expediter didn't say much except that the noodles had to be prepped and now he is waiting for shrimp.  I told him that was not really acceptable and he didn't say anything but kept working on his other orders. 

At this point, I was getting frustrated as I had never had to wait that long for an item at Panera before, even at their busiest on a Saturday morning.  I did find the manager who was apologetic as she was in the back (prepping shrimp!) and wasn't aware that there were such long waits (I checked the expediter monitor and there were others waiting as long as I was for differing items).  She also mentioned that they were so busy this past week that they were running out of everything.  Being that I work in the restaurant industry, I could see her point, but it still didn't explain the long wait for an item that was clearly advertised as a new product and should have been overstocked, if anything.

She did offer another item as a replacement, but I told her that since I was already there, and planning on staying for a while, it wasn't necessary but that I just wanted to bring it to her attention as it was such an anomaly. 

I can't say that I won't ever go to Panera again because it's where our knitting group typically meets, but there are several other restaurants in the vicinity that I might suggest until Panera gets over their supply issues.

The IHOPs here are pretty good with quick and friendly service. I think you should complain to corporate.

We've talked about IHOP before but I don't remember if I said this already.  The IHOP by my house was so awesome.  Friendly and fast service.  Sparkling clean.  Balloons for the children.  Food was always fresh and perfectly made.  The line was out the door on weekends.

Then the manager left.  After that, everything went downhill and I haven't been back in over a year.  Driving past, I don't see those lines anymore either.

The one nearest me is always packed, and given that the pancakes are like cardboard disks, I can't for the life of me figure out why. I only go there in times of desperation.
