Last Night at the Grill
« on: March 29, 2011, 05:53:06 PM »
When this happened, my first thought was, "This is perfect for the Complete Silence forum."

[BG]My husband & I live in a Waikiki highrise with a swimming pool, jacuzzi, and gas grills on the rooftop recreation deck.  We bought our tiny 1-bedroom over 17 years ago and DH has served over 10 years on the Board of Directors. [/BG]

I was using one grill and there was an older man using the adjacent grill.  His comments and attitude were irritating from the start.  He asked if I lived here (almost half of the building is used as a timeshare/hotel) and I said we had lived here for 17 years.  He commented about the studios being cramped.  I said, "We bought a 1-bedroom."  He made a big issue out of his home being a Very Large Estate in The Hamptons.  I tried a "little silence" as a reply since I couldn't think of anything.

Then he goes off: He's been coming here for 4 months every year for 40 years.  Hawaii is backward; We should have built the rail back when Fasi was mayor; The government is all messed up, and (wait for it) ... the people here are all terrible.

Is there any other response than complete silence?  I thought, "Hey, I live here!"

Silence is golden.  8)

I am always amused by people who continue to do things that hurt/frustrate/annoy them. I wonder what he says about Hawaii to his neighbors in the (freezing) Hamptons?

Oh dear.  I think it's time for the clue-by-four.

One wonders why he would continue to come to such a terrible place with those awful people? ::)

And it took him 160 months to realize this? Not particularly bright, is he....?

It seems to me if oyu'd lived there 17 years and he'd been coming for 40 plus years you'd have run into him at least once or twice already.  Little man, Little mind.  Ignore Ignore Ignore.  He was just trying to sound important.

I saw him once before, but I was sharing a grill with some people I see all the time and we were chatting.  The grills were put in about 5 years ago.

Ironically, one big benefit of having the grills on the rec deck is that we get to know our neighbors.  I have several "BBQ Buddies."  Sometimes we have potluck parties and anyone can join.  I've been up there grilling while another resident was having a party and they offered me wine, beer, & food from their extensive spread while I waiting for my meat to cook.

I plan to ignore him.  He could have skipped the half-hearted introduction as he left - he said, "My name is *Joe.*"

He was just plain insulting at times.  I grill a lot.  I have a kitchen timer and a meat thermometer, along with my own BBQ utensils.  He made a derogatory comment about "not needing all that equipment to cook meat."  And I care because?

And the food is so awful, basically inedible, and the portions are too small.
