Thrift Score!
« on: April 09, 2011, 07:30:33 PM »
I just returned from a trip to my neighborhood Salvation Army (I will really miss having it right across the street when we move!). Picked up some $.50 books, some art supplies, the usual. But on my second sweep (first trip round is quick, second is slow so I can consider carefully) I spotted a Lladro figurine. Yes. Real Lladro. For $.80. I don't know a thing about Lladro, but I know it's worth a little more than a dollar, so I snatched it up and then googled the second I got home. And found this!  :o Now, mine isn't new in the box, but it's in perfect condition, and heck, even if I sell it for $10 I've made a profit. That is my Thrift Score for the month.

What awesome things have you snagged?

I've mentioned it before, but a few years ago I got a complete set (8 place settings plus serving set) of beautiful vintage fine china in pristine condition for $25--and I got a student discount that made it only $20.

cool!

I was looking for books to cut up and use the pages to decorate the nursery this year...
I grabbed books w/ cool pictures.
Got home and decided this one:  The Pink & Gold-Spotted Elephant was to cool to cut up, even if it only cost me 25c and, on a whim, googled it...ebayed it for about $30
(it's 'worth' more...but the bottom is out of parts of the book market too)

2 David Winter cottages, $15 each.  The after-market price -- $2000-$3000 each.

It's true. Money can't buy happiness.  You have to turn it
into books first.

Back when I was in high school, way way way back when, I bought a metal display cabinet for $100.  It was a LOT of money back then.  It was almost 5 feet tall, about 4 feet wide, and had 4 adjustable metal shelves.  The front had two sliding glass doors.

I still have it.  :)  I painted it to look like green marble.  I LOVE this thing!  It's been through each and every move, and each time I move my mother asks me if I'm going to keep it.  I bought the cabinet back in 1978. It's one of the few surviving things from growing up.

I found one of those Ronco "set it and forget it" rotisserie ovens last year.  Freaking wow it makes some good chicken!!  Cost me $15, and it's worth it!!

A sewing machine for $6. It's older than me, but it's a Singer and it works better than my Mum's new one. You can still get parts for it too, and I downloaded the manual for it. It's green apple coloured and looks awesomely retro  :P

Seriously?  That's a GREAT deal!  My mom collects RCD paperweights, and has several of the birds; in fact, she might even have this very one.  They're quite pricy; and she has a nice collection; my dad and I used to get them for her, and mom and I for my dad.

I found a set of four Chicago Cutlery kitchen knives for $12 at a thrift store just a few days ago, and it was their 50% off day, so I walked out of there with all 4 knives for $6. You can't even find Walmart kitchen knives for that cheap around here.

The pink three-tiered candy dish in the second row

I paid 75 cents for mine.

Edited to add:  It's now in the third row.

I made a thread about it when I picked it up, but I got a signed first printing copy of Mitch Hedburg's Strategic Grill Locations for $3.00 at our local thrift store.
