Not a thrift score, but dumpster, and not mine, but just seen on Antiques Roadshow. A woman brought in a photo and 1949 cancelled payroll check signed by Micky Mantle. Her grandfather had been the manager of one of the Yankee minor league teams and fished them out of the trash! Micky's first year in baseball; photo was worth about $1000, but the check was one of the earliest examples of his signature, and from his first year playing baseball. Check was worth $30-50K, and when he asked if she had any more, she said there were five in total. Value for all $150K - 200K and he said he might be low! She was crying at the first appraisal, and speechless after he told her what they all were worth!
