You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd say it was someone who's a longtime friend of my grandparents. It sounds exactly like the sort of thing Pam W would do-- right down to having enough money to put on a sumptuous feast, but instead preferring to feed her guests the leftovers from a Masonic Lodge 'do.
