Symbols Next to Posts / Posters ?

What do they mean ?

You'll sometimes see a thumbs down, a thumbs up, an angry face that looks kind of like this >  but a tad bit different, etc. I just want to know the meanings of them and why they're there ?

You know, i only ever have used them when starting a thread; but i am trying to add a cheezy smile on this one.

Edited to say it worked

... and to correct the word that changes to "bacon-fed knave" to add   I was adding a smiley, no mooning was involved.

To tell you the truth, i only ever noticed it when starting a thread and would have remained oblivious if you hadn't pointed out that you can do it on any post.
