Yes it is all my fault you had to do your job......
« on: December 29, 2006, 12:19:58 AM »
I went to a national bath store earlier today and bought some lotion that was marked 75% off of the original price of $16.50. A nice cashier rang me up and I paid and as I was walking away I realized she charged me $7.00 a bottle. I went back and we did the math again and I was right that it should have been about $4.00/each. She said she needed a manager to do the return.

The manager comes over and says well the price was so close they probably didn't bother to change it in the system. Um $7 is not close to $4 especially when buying a couple of bottles. She was very rude and acted like I was inconsiderate and annoying for wanting to get the $6 back they over charged me.

I was not mad about the mistake (first day of sale and I know stuff happens) until I encountered the very rude manager. We weren't talking about a few pennies but I could have bought a whole other bottle for what they over charged me. I haven't decided if I am going to try to talk to the store manager tomorrow and I also don't know the name of the manager from tonight.

Something I used to hear frequently back when I used to work in retail:

"Working in retail would be great if it weren't for the customers."

Unfortunately, too many retail workers really do feel this way.  I'm not sure if it would do any good to complain to the store manager (the workers would just deny everything and say that YOU were being difficult - yes, I know this from experience).  It might make you feel better, but it also might turn out to be a huge waste of your time.

If it were me, I wouldn't devote any more energy or emotion to it and just write them off as undeserving of any more of your time.

If you try to complain without the offending manager's name, you're probably wasting your time.

"That girl from last night was mean to me" does not carry the same weight as, "I came in for a refund on the 28th and felt Ms.Tucker's behavior was unprofessional because of [clearly stated facts]".

Check your receipt(s) for a name, although you would need to be sure that it's the manager's name and not the initial clerk's.

You know, rude managers were the worst part of working retail to me...we had one who's treatment of customers made me cringe regularly....

Hang around a school long enough and you'll hear, "Teaching would be a wonderful job if not for the children."

Working in a job that requires dealing with other people (no matter their age) always means you'll want to kill someone for annoying you.

But that's life. :D

I wonder if the "mistake" had worked in your favor if the manager would have thought that $4 was close to $7?  Why do I think that the answer would be "no."

It also sounds like the manager was admitting to you that the store rips people off since "they did not bother to change it in the system."

or your money.

if you DO want to pursue this farther, i'd contact the corporate offices, inquiring as to if it is their corporate policy to not honor the sales prices that they post, as was done in this case?  i wouldn't even get into the behavior of the manager, just state the basic facts of what the posted sales price was, and what the register rang up.

That is the most lame excuse for an oversight that I've ever heard.

I'm thinking that she did go in and complain to another manager, they should know who the manager was at the time of the transaction.   IF they wanted to actually correct the problem, it would be simple to do.   Me, I'm just too lazy, and would probably just put it in the back of my mind and either not shop there again, or be more alert if I did shop there again.

If it is national chain, go to corporate.  First of all this is illegal in a lot of States.  They have shown this on some local tv stations and I think I saw it on Dateline.

Have the date and time you were there when you complain.  That should be on the receipt.  They should be able to figure out who was working from that.  Most corporate retail places I have worked the manager had to keep and/or submit copies of the schedule every week.  Also you better bet payroll knows who was working when.

I remember from my days in retail, we always hated a complaint that went through corporate.  And yes, believe me, just getting a mild 'don't let it happen again' is a big deal when it comes from above, especially for a manager.

I try to compliment by e-mail every time I see excellent customer service, because I don't think that gets recognized often enough, so I never feel bad about complaining when I have specific information.

Usually they will send you a form e-mail back so watch your junk mail.  But I have received personal e-mails and phone calls from corporate heads.

Complain.
