Address Lables - good or bad??
« on: December 29, 2006, 01:10:55 AM »
IF this is in the wrong place i apologize - just let me know where it would be more suited.

Background:  I do all the Christmas cards for hubby and i, meaning all his work cards, my friends, his friends, our friends and family.  THis year i sent out nearly 150 cards (i start the weekend of Thankgiving and was done by December 7 - had to get work addresses)  On the inside of each card i addressed the person/persons (all individual family members) and wrote a short message before signing all our names.  Then i hand wrote the family's name and address on the envelope.  i then used a preprinted label for our return address.

Hubby thought that was rude - he really couldn't believe that i didn't handwrite our name and return address on the envelopes.  At first i thought he was joking - these are very nice address labels - they come with our check orders and are professionally printed - black ink on a white background.  But he's adament that i should not have used them.

It truely never dawned on me NOT to use them.  Did i have one of my infamous "blonde" moments or is it ok to use preprinted return address lables on Christmas cards?

I don't see why not.

But I have CTS, so anything like that is a help ;)

I think it's perfectly acceptable.  About 75% of Christmas cards I receive have preprinted labels on them, as do all the ones I send out.  To be honest, I doubt most people will even notice one way or another.  If DH wants all the return addresses handwritten, then perhaps he should do it himself.  I think you're amazing for writing and addressing 150 cards, complete with individual message, in the first place!

I was going to say the same thing as SammyCat. If he wants return addresses written, than do that himself!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with machine printed return addresses.  Why write out one more thing that really doens't matter if you can avoid it? You wrote everything else and that's what matters.

Not to mention, if the card needs to be returend to you for some reason (ie, incorrect address or it gets lost, whatever), its probably easier for the post office to read a printed label than handwritten addresses, which, when put in that little corner, often appear small and illegible due to size restraints.

It is not appropriate to use preprinted labels on a wedding invitation. Any other time there is no problem. I use them myself.
BTW, I don't think that I would be offended even if I got a wedding invitation with a preprinted label. I have bigger fish to fry....
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

Next year, put all the cards in their envelopes and hand them to him with a pen and the address book.

I'll take legible over handwritten any day, same with a preprinted label over no card because the sender didn't have time to handwrite everything.

I've never received a card or letter that didn't use printed address labels. What is this, the 19th century?  :P

I make my own, but since I can't figure out how to print labels on my computer, I just print them on paper and paste them on with Pritt. I like to make my own because them I can have a picture and a slogan like, "I'd rather be watching Stargate Atlantis." ;D

I do not see anything wrong with a return address label, In fact I don't see anything wrong with a label for the main address either......at least the post office can read them.

But I do see something wrong with a lable with all your names on it on the inside instead of signing it.  We recieved several that way this year.  I also think that the ones that you can buy printed with "Happy Holidays from the Suze" are all wrong.

If you are going to send them out the least you can do is SIGN them.

Except on formal invitations, I honestly don't have a problem with pre-printed address labels.  And even on formal invitations, that's because I think that the whole envelope should look consistent.  I'd have the return address printed on the envelope and handwrite the recipient's address.

The rest of the time I don't see that it makes any difference, because it's the message inside the envelope that matters to me.  I certainly think pre-printed thank-you notes are very inappropriate in most situations, for example, but I'd be inclined to let it go for condolence thank-you notes.
I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.

I personally sign all of our Christmas cards and use pre-printed address labels for both the return and addressee. I also include a long, pre-written Christmas letter in every card. I love receiving them so I love sending them. I don't see anything wrong with either your gameplan or mine.

I think it's fine.  I use them on everything I mail.  I don't think I received a single Christmas card with a written return address.  Everyone uses stickers nowadays.

Using address labels is fine.  The fact that you wrote a personal message inside is amazing.  I've received so many cards and they weren't even signed.

Personally, I like the address labels or addresses printed on the envelope.  There are many times where I can't read the return address because I can't decipher the handwriting.

I cut off all the return address labels from envelopes that I receive and then update my address book with them. I just tape this year's holiday return address label over last year's in my little book. Therefore I prefer when people use the pre-printed address labels cause it keeps me up date :)

Perhaps Hubs should do the cards next time, being the epitome of manners, class and virtue that he seems to think that he is. Oh, nothing but the BEST will do. ::) ;D
