So, you personalized *150* cards, hand-addressed the envelopes, and your DH thinks you committed a faux pas by using labels for the return address?

I'd be inclined to tell him "Fine, you do it next year."

I see *no* problem with your use of labels for the return address :). Of course, my handwriting is appalling (always has been), so any chance I have to escape handwriting something is a win in my book.

Did he tell you why he thinks this?  Maybe he would like the job of doing the cards next year?
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

it was mainly on the the cards i sent to his work associates.  i'm not sure what he thought pattern was except that they would think we did some sort of generic mail out??

EVERY card we got had a preprinted address lable on it (and we only got 3 cards back from his work associates - and one was a family picture, preprinted with "Happy Holidays" and not signed)  THAT ended our issues.

I don't see how it could be considered "rude" to use a pre-printed return address label on a Christmas card envelope!  Heavens to Mergatroid!  The man needs a hobby!

I have an aunt who has very little vision, so when I get a letter or card from her she uses a return address label and an address label with my name/address on it.  I don't mind this, as her handwriting is quite hard to read, and I'm sure the post office appreciates being able to figure out where her letters are going.  It's the same reason I don't mind her sending me preprinted cards - I know how hard it is for her to sign cards.

When I send cards or letters, I always use preprinted address labels.  If the OP's DH wants handwritten return addresses, he can write them himself.

I'm in the camp with those who said if what you do isn't good enough, let DH take over. My guess is that he won't mind your using those return address labels after all.

I have no problem with preprinted return address labels (I use them) or even preprinted labels for the addressees (I don't use them) - what bothers me is when people use printed return address labels AND addressee labels AND preprinted cards - in other words, nothing is either handwritten or personalized to the recipient. Even if it's nothing more than a handwritten signature - "The Smiths" handwritten, for example - I make the effort to eliminate any appearance or feeling of assembly-line greetings.

I know that handwritten Christmas cards are a dying tradition. I heartily wish that were not so.

I call those the cards that were never touched by human hands. I always tell DH that some people have pet monkeys that stuff the envelopes so they won't be bothered with any labor. ;D

If it were not for pre-printed address labels for both the recipients and our return address our holiday cards would arrive sometime in March! After hand-addressing hundreds of cards for my clients I simply don't have the time or energy to do our own.  That being said, I do personalize and hand sign each card. I also prepare a general newsletter, but personalize the "Dear _________ line and add a personal paragraph or two at the bottom of the general news.

PS: Using a glue stick to seal the envelopes is much faster and less messy than the old sponge and water trick. That and the stamping can also be delegated to someone else.  The delegates would prefer to take over that job so I have time to bake.  ;D Cookies always win the day.

My best friend and I do a Christmas card exchange on another forum we are regulars on, and we always print out labels, it's so much easier for us, so I say go for it.

Labels are wonderful! Marvelous! Perfectly acceptable!

The ONLY thing about return address labels that bothers me is when people DON'T put any sort of return address and have a pre-printed message on the inside...and I haven't the first clue who on earth these people are!! ???

I've never received a card or letter that didn't use printed address labels. What is this, the 19th century?  :P

I make my own, but since I can't figure out how to print labels on my computer, I just print them on paper and paste them on with Pritt. I like to make my own because them I can have a picture and a slogan like, "I'd rather be watching Stargate Atlantis." ;D

Quick off-topic reply for T'Mar...  I also have trouble getting those little labels to line up in my printers.  I just bought some of those full-sheet sticky labels by Avery, printed out a page that I had formatted to have my address repeated over and over (with even a fancy initial for decoration), and cut them out.  You don't have to apply glue, although it can be tricky removing the backing if you don't have long nails.

TIP:

If you hold your scissors at an agle when making your cuts it makes removing the backing much easier. the backing will be slightly bigger or smaller (depending on the angle of the scissors) than the sticky part, giving you a little something you can 'peel'

Thanks; I'll have to look out for those. Art and craft stores are very thin on the ground here.

I'm all for those pre-printed address labels; at least one charity sends me Christmas-themed ones which are much appreciated.

My handwriting falls apart when having to do it that small and that many times.  It's better when the return address is clear.
