Why was your dad so hostile about your brother not being able to come? If his wife was sick then it was better that they stay home. I mean, someone had to help her with the kids while she was ill....I know I've been sick all day and minding a three year old because my hubby couldn't get off work.
Does your father behave this way routinely. I'm really sorry you had such a nasty holiday. I think I agree that I would stay in a hotel next time, gives you a sanctuary when Daddy Dearest kicks up a fuss....

If I read what you said about your brother correctly, I don't blame your dad for being upset.  She's sick so we won't eat, but we might come and get you all sick later?  That's crud, and you know it too.  That being said, stick with the hotel if Daddy can't get his temper under control.

* My mother's back went out on her and I had to do most of the work of cooking and cleaning by myself. Well, my dad helped some. The last morning we were there, she was trying to tell me to go make breakfast for my DH and my dad. I said no. They can make it for a change. I was tired and didn't get much sleep the night before, plus I didn't feel very good.

Good for you!  You pitched in and helped out...what is wrong with the others helping too?

* My brother and his wife were invited to Christmas Dinner with us, and accepted the invitation. But when my mom called and asked if they were still coming he said that they had to have dinner at their house and then he said his wife was sick. WHatever. He said they might show up later on after we eat. He called on the 26th and talked to my Dad and my dad hung up on him. Dad then took the gifts he got for them back. Even their kids. My dad proceeded to be a MAJOR GROUCH the rest of our visit. I went out for the afternoon so I wasn't there. My DH was and he said it was pretty bad. He had plans to go visit his best friend but he didn't want to leave the kids there with my dad the way he was. Dad proceeded to take his bad mood out on everyone.

Seems to me your brother really didn't want to come, but didn't want to say so.  But anyway, perhaps if your Dad ever acts that way again, you could say:  "Dad, I know that you are miffed that Bro did not come.  But you know what?  Me and DH *are* here, and we would like if you could stop the grouch act. 'Kay? "
